Treatments

Acne – Teen and Adult
Inflammation of the oil glands of the skin which results in spots most commonly on the face, chest and back. This usually starts in teenage years. It is nothing to do with diet or not being clean, but linked with the action of hormones on the oil glands in the skin.

Sun Damage
One major effect that sunlight or ultraviolet light (UV) has on your skin is to damage it. Short term it causes sunburn, but longer term effects are even more hazardous. UV ages your skin, but its most dangerous effect is to cause skin cancer.

Skin Cancer Screening
This is the commonest type of malignant skin tumour, also known as a rodent ulcer. It is a slow growing and locally destructive tumour. They do not heal and can damage skin structures near to them.

Skin Biopsy
A skin biopsy is a procedure in which a small piece of living skin is removed from the body for examination, usually under a microscope, to establish a precise diagnosis. Skin biopsies are usually brief, straightforward procedures performed by a skin specialist (dermatologist) or family physician.

Cyst Removal and Biopsy
Cysts (also know as sebaceous cysts) are small closed sacs that contain fluid or solid material. A cyst is an infection and requires that the dermatologist drain the contents and sometimes surgically remove the cyst. Sebaceous cysts most often arise from swollen hair follicles. Skin trauma can also induce a cyst to form. A sac of cells is created into which a protein called keratin is secreted.

Dermatitis
Dermatitis is a blanket term literally meaning "inflammation of the skin". It is usually used to refer to eczema, which is also known as Dermatitis eczema. There are several different types. Usually all of them have in common an allergic reaction to specific allergens.

Warts
A wart is generally a small, rough tumour, typically on hands and feet, that resembles a cauliflower. Warts are common, and are caused by a viral infection, specifically by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They typically disappear after a few months but can last for years and can recur.

Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is a disorder characterized by excessive sweating that occurs in up to 1% of the population. The excessive sweating can occur in the hands (palmar hyperhidrosis), in the armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis), or in the feet (plantar hyperhidrosis). Although nobody understands the exact cause of this excessive sweating in specific individuals, it is known that the sweating is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system.

Skin Rash
The word "rash" means an outbreak of red bumps on the body. The way people use this term, "a rash" can refer to many different skin conditions. The most common of these are Scaly patches of skin not caused by infection, Scaly patches of skin produced by fungus or bacterial infection, Red, itchy bumps or patches all over the place.

Rosacea/Psoriasis
Rosacea is a chronic (long-term) disease that affects the skin and sometimes the eyes. The disorder is characterized by redness, pimples, and, in advanced stages, thickened skin. Rosacea usually affects the face; other parts of the upper body are only rarely involved.
Inflammatory skin condition which is not contagious and is sometimes, though not always, inherited. There is a section on psoriasis giving all the relevant information.

Facial Peels
A facial peel is a cosmetic, chemical treatment that can be performed at by or with a dermatologist to help lessen the appearance of blemishes, freckles, age spots, light scarring, and any number of other skin irregularities on the face. Also called chemical peels, facial peels can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and give new life to sun-damaged skin.
